Some songs take their time finding their shape. Others arrive all at once. “Over and Over” was one of those. Son started singing it to himself late one night while driving home from a gig. He pulled over on the side of the road and tried to sing it into his phone before it disappeared.
Unfortunately it was pouring rain, and the recording mostly captured windshield wipers and traffic. Luckily the song was stubborn enough to stick around until he made it home.
Lyrics
Can’t outrun this heart of mine
Or calm its rhythm with salt and lime
In the aching hours when I’m on my own
It calls for her, pays me no mind
Over and Over
And over again
I’m falling
I can’t calm this heart of mine
Calls for her, pays me no mind
Rests in the shadow of her smile
In a shade as easy a meadow pine
Over and Over
And over again
I’m falling
Falling down into
the deepest parts of her
I don’t think I’ll ever find the ground
And I’m still falling
Wait by the window in the evening light
When the shadows fall and I think that I
Might stop it beating to still the cry
From want of her at the edge night
Over and Over
And over again
I’m falling
Falling down into
the deepest parts of her
I don’t think I’ll ever find the ground
Still falling
Like a true believer
Longing to see her
Like a vision on the water come for me
I’m falling down
into the deepest parts of her
I don’t think I’ll ever find the ground
And I’m still falling
